It’s a busy month for Xbox Game Pass, and PC Game Pass in particular. Developed in 2005 by Raven Software in collaboration with id Software, Quake 4 is a narrative-driven, sci-fi, military-style first-person shooter and direct sequel to Quake II that also includes arena-style multiplayer modes. After the multiplayer-only Quake 3, it continued the story of Quake II and the invasion of Stroggos, now with AI buddies, and other gameplay twists that were increasingly common in the mid-2000s. The episode 1 contains: 8 maps mission 1: The Strogg Base mission 2: The Strogg Machinery mission 3: The Strogg Waste mission 4: Strogg Intoxication mission 5: The Sewers. Quake 4 is also good to see, a launch title for the Xbox 360 (though that’s not being included today) and a pretty tough test for PCs of the day as it used a modified version of the Doom 3 game engine. Episode 1 of the first expansion for Quake 4, created by Benjamin Pulido. It’s something of a standalone title within the Wolfenstein franchise, with the 2009 Wolfenstein largely ignoring it, and then the MachineGames Wolfenstein series heading off in a thoroughly different direction. Developed by Gray Matter Interactive and Nerve Software, it was a remake of the Wolfenstein mythos, with BJ Blazkowicz on the trail of Deathshead’s plot to unleash mystical forces and biological weapons upon the Allies. Return to Castle Wolfenstein is an absolute gem from the early 2000s. PC Magazine gave Quake 4 a good review for both singleplayer and multiplayer gameplay.
